The following document comprises the research and designs for a CubeSat-Based Space Debris Mitigation project for Capstone Senior Mechanical Engineering Design Project. The year-long project investigates potential solutions to space debris involving a small-scale debris capturing system. The solution design adheres to the launch standards of the nano-satellite CubeSat launched by NASA, the selected payload platform. This project includes thorough background research of the space debris environment, various debris removal methods, deployable structures, and necessary documentation is below. The project’s constraints of size, weight, and power guided the decision to opt for a net deployment structure to collect and deorbit 1 – 10 cm debris. The report includes orbital decay modeling and calculations regarding the space debris impact and outlines the design details of the netting, deployment structure, and capturing method.
